Glitter-Arty Nails

You may have noticed a new craze recently, or even experience it “first hand”, especially if you are a bit of an Instagram addict as I am!

It’s the whole fancy, glittery, multi-coloured nail painting craze. Girls (and some guys) all over the world seem to be going nail painting crazy. And by crazy I mean, painting each nail with about 4 different colours, except for one finger which is completely different to the rest or getting zebra stripes, skulls, lettering and all sorts painted onto their nails!
I don’t really get it myself. I used to paint my nails every weekend before a night out up until the age of about 21, from a different pastel colour on each finger to getting nail jewellery pierced into my nails. I loved spending my wages on about 10 different polishes. That is until I got fed up with having to remove them and re-pint them 3 times a week and my nails started getting a yellowy tinge to them from excess nail polish.

Anyway, last weekend, I had friends coming down and we were going to Shakedown festival in Brighton. Seeing as this is probably the last festival I will be doing this year, and the last big day/night out I will be having probably until Christmas, I decided to splash out and get my nails manicured and painted so I booked an appointment with The Powder Rooms on Duke Street.

I love this place. It’s a bit easy to miss as is tucked in between the Victory pub and Browns restaurant on Duke Street but when you walk in it almost feels like you are in Alice in Wonderland with the beautiful flooring, furniture and trinkets over the main entrance. I was booked in with the lovely Laura who sat me down and discussed what colours I wanted on my nails. As I said previously, I don’t understand this whole craze for painting all your nails one colour then having just one nail on each hand a different colour so I opted for green and blue glitter on each nail. After just over an hour of preening my nails this is how my nails came out -

Definitely worthy of the money I paid and all ready for Shakedown festival! They last between 1 – 2 weeks depending on how careful you are with them. (I wear gloves whilst baking brownies and they managed to keep for a week).

Make sure you get yourself down the Powder Rooms and choose amongst a number of designs and patterns. They do a number of other treatments including waxing, pedicures, make up and tanning and the girls there will all make you feel right at home.

Be sure to mention that you heard about them through my blog too.

“Quite possibly the best brownies I’ve ever tasted….”

Yet again another brilliant review about my delicious homemade brownies! Check out Camilla’s blog Be Gluten Free – Brighton for the rest of her review on my brownies, which make perfect gifts for all the family and your friends!

Camilla also has a lot of other information on eating out (gluten free) in Brighton so for more information check her blog out!

“Review of Have Cake Brownies

When I was asked to review these brownies I was very excited because a) I love brownies! and b) I haven’t had an amazing brownie since being gluten free. The supermarket brownies I have had so far, have been nice but pretty standard.

After looking on the Have Cake website, I had a lot of hope for these!

So, on a slightly miserable Friday, a box of Have Cake gluten free brownies were delivered to my office & certainly cheered up my rubbish day (I wish this would happen every day!).
The brownies came beautifully wrapped & presented in a generous box of 9. They were wrapped in lovely blue tissue paper with a ribbon, it was like opening a present!

These would make a fab gift for anyone gluten free or not gluten free and they also do vegan.
In the box were some peanut butter ones & some white chocolate chunk and they didnt disappoint. I must say that these are quite possibly the best brownies I’ve ever tasted, gluten free or otherwise!

They are really moist, sticky, delicious, smooth & crunchy all at the same time – the texture is perfect.
I love the chewiness of the brownie contrasted with the crunch of the white chocolate chunks & peanut butter.
The peanut butter brownies have a brilliant swirly pattern, very pretty!
The most important factor with these brownies is that they don’t crumble which a lot of gluten free cakes do & that drives me mad! Also, they are a really good size.

I would definitely want to try the other flavours and think they would make a great gift for friends and family (or myself!).

But beware, mine didn’t last longer than the weekend and I want more already!

Look Who Is Back….

Dear All,

As some of you aware I have a cheeky squirrel who wanders over mine and my neighbours courtyards, being an absolute nuisance and digging up the plants as well as hungrily coming to my kitchen window sometimes and eyeing up my HaveCake peanut butter brownies. The chocolaty nutty aroma wafts around the neighbourhood whilst I am baking yummy brownies to send out as gifts for my customers.

Some of you may recall some weeks back the picture I posted on the havecake facebook page where, after I sprayed squirrel repellent over all my window sills and garden walls, only minutes later I spied the squirrel in heavy embrace with the bottle of squirrel repellent which completely had the opposite intended effect.

Well I now have evidence that the squirrel is getting even more brazen then ever! Not content with eyeing up my delicious peanut butter brownies, he was caught at the bottom of the courtyard foraging in the recycle bin and you could have knocked me down with a……..well a bushy tail when I saw him running off with his head in a empty peanut butter jar!!

Reports of a beast with a large head in Clacton, Essex over the Bank holiday being mistaken for a lion makes me wonder how far he managed to get!

Caption anyone?

Amazing Review of my Brownies!

I received a great review about my brownies last week and wanted to share it with you to show just exactly what people are saying about my delicious brownies!

Saara writes The Gluten Free Student Cookbook website which is full of recips, reviews and other helpful information about dealing with eating a gluten free diet, but without missing out on those delicious treats you thought you may never be able to eat again.

This is what she wrote about my brownies -

I was really excited to review HaveCakes gluten free and vegan brownies!

One thing you should know about me is that I love, love, LOVE my brownies but it’s sometimes hard to find those gluten free brownies that have that ‘home baked’ taste. I’m lucky that my local supermarket, Asda, produce their own gluten free brownies, but I find they lack that ‘home made’ taste and are actually quite dry!

So, when the huge box of brownies arrived at my door, I was quite surprised at how big the box was! I did pause for a moment to think whether I’d inadvertently ordered myself new shoes! I just loved the way the brownies were packaged. With coloured tissue paper and a cute bow, this made them ideal as a gift for your coeliac and free from chums!

I was also impressed at the size of the brownies!

As you can see you get your moneys worth and because you get 9 whole brownies in a box it also explains why the box was so huge – great value for money!

So What Did They Taste Like?

They had that ‘home made’ taste that I adore from gluten free bakes! They were chocolatey, light, moist without that horrible crumbly texture that tends to plague gluten free baked foods! What’s more, because I shared them with my family, they couldn’t believe that they were gluten, dairy and egg free! Even my ever so fickle brother loved them and trust me when I say this – he’s very fussy with his food. In fact he’s the one who ate most of the brownies and wants to order more!

Plus don’t take my word for it, if you check the HaveCake Brownies website, you’ll find amazing and glowing reviews from coeliac and  free from peeps who have been lucky enough to try these amazing brownies!

So Who Are HaveCake?

HaveCake is run by the lovely Louise  who has been a passionate baker from a very young age. She started baking traditional recipes for friends and family who encouraged her to set up her own business selling her own cakes and brownies. So when a friend with coeliac disease asked Louise if she could make gluten free brownies as everything she had tried was bland,  too sweet, or too dry, Louise set about experimenting with all recipes until she came up with one her friend could enjoy – and I think she definitely succeeded, they’re amazing!

How Do I Get These Amazing Brownies?

You can order a box of 9 gluten free or gluten free & vegan brownies directly from the HaveCake website. They also come with free delivery and if you order before the 30th September 2012 you’ll also receive 5% discount using the code: ”GFSTUDENTCOOK

Secret Garden Party 2012

Firstly let me apologise for the lack of blogging. I have been busy with trying to find new packaging for my brownies, house hunting (with no such luck) and I was at Secret Garden Party a couple of weekends ago. I have only just managed to get all of the mud out of my bag!

This was my first time going to Secret Garden Party Festival. I am more of a dance festival kind of girl and having been to Global Gathering, Outlook Festival in Croatia, Shakedown Festival, and going to Ibiza, I was a little bit apprehensive about what to expect.

First off was actually trying to get everything packed and in the car. Ha! My sister, house mate Jo and I were going in one car on the Thursday and well, as you can see we had quite a lot of stuff…. (the first photo was just all the stuff for me and Jo!)

ImageImage

We arrived on Thursday afternoon and just as we started to drag our stuff to the camp site, the heavens decided to open on us. Joyous. Then came the lovely task of putting my tent up. The last time I used this tent was at V Festival but lucky me had a lovely set of male friends who decided to do this for me whilst I sat in the sun enjoying my cider. So, trying to put this up in the rain wasn’t fun. Plus it seems it’s like no other tent anyone else has ever seen!

I finally got it together with the help of my sister and dumped all my stuff in but the front entrance wasn’t quite right so I did spend all weekend having to dive in through a space fit for a small child however the blow up airbed made it all the better!

The rain didn’t really stop all Thursday and it was pretty bad on the Friday too which made the whole site a mud marsh and incredibly difficult to get around. Especially with my very pretty, but completely useless wellies which had no grip on them whatsoever. Thank you to everyone who I had to hold onto whilst walking up and down the slopes!

Image

But despite the rain and the mud (which turned into a lovely deep clay later on in the weekend) this was a great festival. There was so much to do and see and the site was absolutely amazing.

Image

There was everything from mud wrestling, paint fights, fireworks, trapeze artists and fire walking. Some of the artists and bands I saw, to name a few were Tim Minchin, Strobe Circus, Adam F (my favourite set), Orbital, Alabama Shakes, Little Dragon, True Tiger, Utah Saints and many more.

I have to talk about the food too as normally at festivals I always find the choice a bit lacking. It’s usually hot dogs, rubbish burgers and tasteless noodles. We did bring out own food and breakfast usually consisted of spaghetti and sausages or bacon sandwiches. But I did go and try some of the food from the stalls and had some delicious Japanese noodles, a great Jerk chicken wrap and a chocolate and banana toastie! I also bought some of my home made brownies with me as I knew we would have cravings for some sweet things.

All in all a very good weekend and I would definitely be interested in going back next year. Although a new tent and some new wellies will be in order!

Find Me This Squirrel…And Win a Box of Brownies!

Think of a caption for the photo below and you could win yourself a box of brownies…It seems I’ve made a new friend, or an enemy, I’m not quite sure which yet.

For the past few days I have noticed a squirrel running over the walls and around the courtyard.  I think he can smell the peanut butter brownies wafting from the oven!  I know some of my neighbours often comment about the delicious smells coming from my home.

This pesky little squirrel doesn’t seem to have any fears about walking right up to the back door and almost ventured into the utility room had I not seen it.

When I was much younger we used to have a squirrel come to our patio doors and take nuts from our hands, the next minute we knew – there was a nest of them chewing through the wooden beams and rafters in the roof and scampering around during the night causing havoc and keeping you all awake.  My Dad managed to block the gap under the eaves with metal so they didn’t return (after the babies had all moved out as we are a bit soft).

Some months later a young couple knocked on the door at 2am shaking with fear asking if they could borrow the phone as they had a burglar up in their attic making all sorts of commotion.  My Mum said it was probably a squirrel, but they were reluctant to believe that squirrel could make such a commotion, so my mum let them call the police from her phone before they went back to await at the front of their gate…..as we thought, no burglars. Just lots of squirrels! The police must have loved writing that report out!

Anyway, as soon as I told my sister that this squirrel was tapping at my back door trying to get at my brownies, she came running round with a bottle of squirrel repellent. My sister, who lives 2 doors down from me and being an avid gardener, has had to pick out empty peanut shells on numerous occasions from her beautiful plants so is extremely keen to get rid of this pest.

Well, as you can see from the below photo, after spraying my entire garden and all around the back door with this “squirrel repellent”, the squirrel was back….

So many words came to mind!  Some are unprintable!  Therefore – I’ve decided to hold a competition to find the best caption for this photo.  Put your caption here, or on the HaveCake Facebook Page and in 14 days I will decide which is the cleverest, wittiest, funniest caption and after I’ve had a good chuckle I will send a box of brownies over to the winner.

Pop Up Art and Too Much Gin…

As previously stated I my “Free Festival Fun” post, there are lots of fun and free events occurring around Brighton this month.

Whether you want to catch some free comedy, or a play, or just pop into the Open Houses to see some of the local artwork, there is something to satisfy everyone’s interests.

I sat outside the Fitzherbert pub on New Road on the weekend watching some local dancers – The Fanti Acrobats International, as they danced around and squeezed into the most awkward of positions, including one of the dancers moulding himself to fit into a large bowl which another dancer carried around.  Crazy stuff!

Then there is the pop up gallery at 40 Gloucester Road  courtesy of Brighton’s Arty Magazine until the 31st May, with fabulous sculptures and paintings from the likes of local artists Mikey Firb, Eve Shepherd and  some fabulous jewellery by Rentaro Nishimura and Jon Forster plus plenty more.

There is also the lovely (but slightly dangerous) pop up Hendricks Gin Bar at Jubilee Square. I say dangerous but it’s probably my own fault for having eaten very little before visiting the bar and then ordering  4 Gin and Absinthe cocktails and drinking them just a little bit too quickly!

The bar is only up until Sunday 27th May so make sure you visit them at some point, especially whilst the sun is out, and try one of their fabulous cocktails and catch a show there too.

Llama Roast?

As you may have realised I do love love love my food and if you ever catch me in a slightly grumpy mood it’s more than likely because I haven’t had food in my stomach for at least 2 hours!

A couple of Sundays ago I had a lovely lazy morning and then wandered down to the Pub With No Name on Southover Street. Now if you live in Brighton, you know that Southover Street is one of the most horrendously steep hills in Brighton, but it’s definitely worth it just to get to the Pub With No Name to try one of their infamous roasts….wild boar, guinea fowl, zebra, and horse to name a few.

This pub could definitely do with a lick of paint and maybe some bits of new furniture to replace the ones that are there and falling apart but the food clearly makes up for all this!

I’m quite an adventurous person when it comes to trying food and having already tried reindeer over Christmas (sorry Rudolph!) I decided to give the Llama roast try. My friend opted for the Springbok (Afrikaans and Dutch: spring = jump; bok = antelope or goat) roast. Both were covered in mountains of vegetables, potatoes and gravy (my mouth is watering at the thought) and I have to say, Llama tastes good! I do feel a bit guilty seeing as my friend has a field of Llamas at the back of her house in Oxford and I used to wander up to them and stroke them…but the delicious flavour soon knocked the guilty feelings away!

Brighton in May – Free Festival Fun!

So as most of you lovely Brightonians know (If you have lived here for more than a couple of years), May is the month in which we have the Fringe Festival, Brighton Festival, The Great Escape Festival, Lady Boys of Bangkok and all sorts of other wonderful pop up art or other shows appearing over the city centre.

There hasn’t been a day I haven’t walked through town to see some crazy dancers appearing on New Road, or gone to see some free (all be it not to be my taste) comedy at a number of pubs around town.

Although I didn’t purchase any tickets for the Great Escape Festival, my sister convinced my friend and I that we could go down to the Queens Hotel to see some free music as part of the “Alternative Great Escape”. We walked down the stairs, after some deliberation with the bouncer as to whether we were actually allowed in without wrist bands, to a dark carpeted room with a large stage in one corner and a small bar in another. After much faffing around with the band setting up, I was quite blown away by the sound that came from The October Game. Quite a rocky sort of sound and the main singer had an amazing powerful voice.

A couple of days later I was convinced by my house mate to go and check out some free comedy as part of the Fringe Festival at the Hobgoblin and then at the Caroline of Brunswick.

I wasn’t expecting much to be honest seeing as I have quite a dry (and dirty) sense of humour. I think I laughed hardest when a female in the audience (who had clearly had far too much to drink) started rattling on about her sheep dog and how she felt really bad that she had got it castrated……

However we did see some brilliant comedians at the Quadrant in town a few days later. It’s definitely worth making the most of the free comedy shows that appear all over town, there will be something to make everyone giggle.

Check the Brighton Fringe and the Brighton Festival website for details on what’s on for the rest of May x

Crock Pot!

So I had a bit of a big birthday this month! Not quite 21 anymore but age is just a number so I plan to make the most of the next decade.  I booked a lovely big cottage in Hastings for me and 13 friends and my lovely house mates, knowing how much I love my cooking got me this beautiful purple Crock-Pot!

Image

I made my first meal in it yesterday which was a lovely chicken Jambalaya. This dish originates from the Caribbean but with Spanish influences in it. You can pretty much put anything in the Crock-Pot, leave it and go about your day for 8 hours then Voila! Perfect and delicious cooked food and you only have to wash out one pot!

Find some of my recipes using my Crock-Pot here xx
